How it works
Clomid and ovulation works by preventing the hormone estrogen to work on the hypothalamus which, in turn, results in the release of follicle stimulating hormones. The higher the level of the follicle stimulating hormone, the more ovarian follicles there are to eventually rupture and cause ovulation.
Multiple births
One of the main side effects of Clomid is that there is the possibility of multiple births, probably twins, as a result of taking the medication. Seven out of every one hundred women who take the drug will have twins. The chances of having anything more than twins, i.e. triplets or quadruplets, are low.
Adverse reactions
Another of the Clomid side effects is an enlargement of the ovary. It is a reversible condition, but can sometimes lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. A complication mainly caused by fertility drugs. It can also lead to an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Common reactions
Among the side effects of Clomid, there may be times when women who take the drug experience some abdominal pain and discomfort, weight gain, nausea and vomiting, or hot flashes. Also, depending on the dosage taken, some women might have blurred vision.

Clomid and Ovulation – Does Clomid Work?
Many women with fertility problems are prescribed clomiphene, a drug which can help make sure you ovulate each month. I will explain all about clomid and how clomid works.
A woman is born with hundreds of thousands of eggs. She is supposed to release an egg every month through the process called ovulation. It is well -known that for a woman to get pregnant, fertilization of the egg must take place. However, there can be no fertilization if Ovulation does not occur.
Ovulation failure is known as anovuulation in medical parlance. It can be treated with a number of medications including Clomid which contains an active ingredient called Clomifene Citrate and therefore leading to clomid induction ovulation
Mechanism of action
For a woman to ovulate many hormonal events come to play and what Clomid does is to increase the level of these hormones. The hormones in question are the luteinizing hormone (LH) the Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and the follicular stimulating hormone (FSH). These hormones work together to stimulate your ovaries to release an egg.
Normally, the sex hormone estrogen sends messages to the brain to stop the release of these hormones. Clomid therefore stops or inhibits this action of estrogen in order to allow ovulation to take place without unhindered.
Apart from treatment of anovuulation (ovulation failure), Clomid is also used in the treatment of irregular menstruation and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
How to use Clomid
You should only follow the direction of your doctor in using any medication. Taking a medication based on a prescription seen on the pages of the internet could spell grave danger. Some of the regimens used however include days 3-7 of your menstrual or days 5-9. The dosage will also be determined by your doctor and ranges between 50mg and 200mg.

Clomid Side Effects – What You Should Know
Learn more about fertility medication such as Clomid, and side effects of clomid. When a woman finds it difficult to get pregnant a series of attempts are made to sort out the problem. Timing, positioning during sex and relaxation to take off stress are often the first line of action. However, when all these fail, a resort is made to fertility drugs like Clomid.
For a woman to get pregnant there has to be fertilization of the egg by a sperm. Yet, fertilization cannot occur without ovulation. Unfortunately, some women are infertile because they are not able to ovulate. Clomiphene Citrate also known as Clomid is a potent prescription infertility drug used to induce ovulation so that you can have a chance to get pregnant.
Like any other medication however, Clomid has its own share of side effects. They include the following;
- 5.5% of women suffering abdominal pain and bloating.
- 2.2% complaining of the ubiquitous vomiting and nausea.
- 1.3% having headaches
- 1.3% experiencing spotting in-between menstrual periods
- Rash
- Visual disturbances
- Difficulty in bleeding
- Hives
- Itching
- Wheezing
- Swelling
- OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome)(weight gain, nausea, stomach pain and/or enlargement)
There are other symptoms which are very rare, occurring in less than 1% of users. These include the following;
- Constipation
- Weight loss
- Vaginal dryness
- Hair loss
- Vertigo
- Insomnia
- Increased appetite.
- Several others
It is very easy to get sacred of the symptoms, but you need to note that the percentages of women who experience these symptoms are very little and clomid ovulation follows if its successful. Hence, Clomid is a relatively safe drug. I have written more on clomid and ovulation in the past and I hope this is useful

You want to check out the symptoms with which PCOS is associated to see if you are suffering from this condition.
- High levels of androgens, which are sometimes called male hormones. Please note that it is not uncommon for females to produce these male hormones but not in high levels as they occur in women with PCOS.
As the name implies, PCOS presents with simple symptoms like acne, dandruff, diabetes and weight gain. Diabetes and weight gain fuel the other symptom of high blood pressure and cholesterol. Other symptoms include balding and blackened necks skin. Other areas that could be blackened include the breasts, arms and thighs. Anxiety, pelvic pain and sleeplessness are among its many symptoms.
One major symptom is many small ovarian cysts and that explains why it is associated with missed periods. At other times irregular or even infertility could result!
Clomid and Metformin
Clomid is the brand name for clomiphene citrate while Metformin is a popular antidiabetic. It is one of the medications used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome. The focus in the use of Clomid is to help in ovulation. Clomid could be used either singly or in combination with Metformin. Current research seems to be in support of the solo use of Clomid.
Currently, just over 20% success rate has been achieved with Clomid while for women on Metformin; the success rate measured by achieving pregnancy is 7.2% so the success rate of clomid induction ovulation is rather dissapointingly low
These are highly specialized medications that can only be taken on prescription and under strict supervision.

Clomid is one of the names given to the fertility drug called Clomifene Citrate. One of the indications for this medication is inability or failure to ovulate. Ovulation failure could result from many causes including the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Used singly or in combination with other medications, Clomid has been found to be of help.
Mode of Action
Clomid is Clomifene Citrate, an anti-oestrogen drug. It increases the levels of the hormone called follicular stimulating hormone (FSH). This makes your ovaries to produce more eggs. Through these steps, Clomid assists in restoring ovulation. More on clomid ovluation
How long is it taken for?
Usually, most women go through a five-six drug cycle of treatment. Each treatment starts about 4-5 days into your cycle. Well, before you run to your doctor, it is pertinent to know that it could take one to two months of treatment before your body takes over naturally and you start ovulating again.
As a precautionary measure and to improve effectiveness, doctors advise that you watch weight while on Clomid. If you are found to be overweight, your doctor might advise you to lose weight.
How much does it help?
Like with any other medication, there is no rule of thumb. The good thing however is that you can expect quite some help from the use of Clomid. Success rates of 70% have been reported in restoration or stimulation of ovulation while pregnancy rates are not that good. The rates reported range from 13 -25%.
